New Music Seminar - Join Me

Join Leah at a legendary event in Chicago

A few weeks ago, I was invited to a reception on a rooftop bar in Chicago. As the helicopters flew overheard for Oprah's big street-party, Martin Atkins of Invisible Records (and Pigface) introduced me to members of Chicago's music scene.

I got into a conversation with a guy named Tom about what I teach my musicians (and all clients) to do using social media and what they've accomplished so far. I Fight Dragons has built a global fan base and is heading on national tour. Stereo Sinai is growing in prominence in the Jewish music scene and being called on to teach others about social media. Matt Ryd is coming into his own through timely videos and great live performances. Cobalt and The Hired Guns have even more power behind their personality as they tour and play around the country.

Then this guy named Tom speaks to the whole crowd about the history of the New Music Seminar and the future of the music business. He talked about what Madonna was like pre-Like a Virgin. How the Beastie Boys were rapping in a hallway and the booker for the Metro heard them and brought them to Chicago.

When he was talking about the future of the music business, he pointed at me and said that the things we do at Natiiv and the things that Natiiv artists are doing - we are the future of the music business. We're part of the industry that is redefining it and getting it right. I was flattered and proud of the bands that have taken Natiiv lessons to heart.

Then Martin pulled me aside and said that Tom was the Tom from Tommy Boy Records.

Gulp.

There's something to be said for being an outsider to the music business. If I'd known who I was talking to, I would have been a nervous wreck.

That set-up given, the New Music Seminar is back after a 15 year hiatus and it is coming to Chicago next week. It is going to be a one-day future of the industry event and you're invited. In fact, I'm allowed to bring a couple guests - so let me know if you want to come with me.

Also, I would love nothing more than to combine my love of the web with my love of music, so I would actually learn a lot from this.
