Jew Candy–not just for parades and purim anymore.

Writer's picture: Leah JonesLeah Jones

So last night was a jam packed erev shabbat service. There was a bar mitzvah (erev bar mitzvah) and a first shabbat for a baby girl and a couple about to be wed received a blessing.

Okay all you jews who read my blog. After the blessing–you know, wrapped in the Tallit together and a little thing from the Rabbi–WE THREW CANDY AT THEM! Their families passed out candy so we could pelt them with candy. Barry was sitting next to me and either said this is “offal” (the Hebrew or Yiddish term for candy throwing at betrothed) or “awful” (as in, it really hurts to be up there, being pelted with candy)

What is it? Offal or awful? Can somebody PLEASE explain this to me? (don’t worry, I also have an email in to my Rabbi. Somewhere there is an explanation.)
