World Cup of Rugby–England Wins!

Writer's picture: Leah JonesLeah Jones

Okay, I overslept and didn’t make it out on Saturday morning to watch the face off between Australia and England’s national teams. Too bad, because England won in an amazing game. They went into the second half with a considerable lead and lost ground to Australia, ending the second half in a tie. The game then went into overtime with each team scoring additional points (or not at all, I’m not sure). Anyway, at the end of the overtime, they were tied again and sudden death was moments away when BOOM! England scores and wins. Hooray! Hooray! Horns start honking across the city, fans jump up and down and scream in pubs and out windows. By the time I got to Covent Gardens Market, Punch ‘n’ Judy Pub was full of young guys wearing jerseys and flags singing rugby songs. For some reason I haven’t figured out, “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” is a key song for this team–so the streets echo with people singing it. They must be changing a word in there somewhere.

Anyway, the whole point is the it reminded me of what it felt like every time the Cubs won during the playoffs and at the end of the season. I would run down the alley from Sweet Occasions to my apartment and struggle to get WGN radio up and on so I could here the 9th inning. And how the bars would just go crazy and people would honk the horns of their cars and scream and yell and run around. I think England winning the world cup is what it would probably feel like if we’d won the world series. Except the World Cup is every 4 years, played by national teams, and much more a global sport. But still. Go Cubs.
