Tonight I got to be with a family I’m friends with for the fifth night of Hanuka. Had some yummy latkes, worked and worked on our shul’s website, and then lit the five candles with her the family. I love going into home where the family loves being jewish and this was one of those homes. A shelf the length of a wall was lined with shabbat candlesticks, there is a drawer full of menorahs (menorot?), a bit of hebrew here, a bit of hebrew there.
It isn’t the first time I’ve been in a home like that and I always love it. I imagine what it will be like in 20 years or 40 years in my own home. When the candlesticks and menorah I have now will be my first sets, not my only. It is also what convinces me that maybe I can get another set of shabbat candlesticks and it will be ok.
So, yeah, there are three more nights of hanukkah. I’ve enjoyed it so far. It has just been quiet, obviously. In part because I’ve been recovering from the food poisoning from christmas dinner. If it had just been me, I would probably be set on keeping kosher. It would have been god’s way of saying, “Oh Leah. When you say, ‘I talked to God, he’s okay with it,’ I ‘m not really. To you I give SIX HOURS OF VOMITING and two days of eating saltines and chicken broth.” My stomach is pretty much back to normal–hooray.
I don’t know how my sis and bro-in-law recovered while also having to chase the now walking Henry around and around the first floor of the house.
And I just lost of my train of thought. It isn’t coming back, so I’ll just say Hag Sameah. Happy Hanukkah!
