Last night I was in the mood for burgers (when am I not?) and I called some neighbors to try and rally the troops. They were already taking a stab at chicken parmesan and invited me up. I don’t mix meat and dairy, so I declined. But I didn’t tell them that was why, I just said, “I think I’ll get a burger and see you guys another night.” I hate to be the person that says, “I can’t come over, I keep kosher.” So I would rather eat alone.
But my neighbors have memory, remembered another time we all ate together and I explained that I don’t mix meat with dairy and why I’ve made that choice. Ted came downstairs and said, “If you want dinner will be ready in ten minutes.” They made a chicken without parmesan just for me. How nice is that?
So I got to have dinner with them and after dinner they said, “Should we play a game?” They have a game drawer–I LOVE PEOPLE that have game drawers! ANd lots of different games, but we settled on Trivial Pursuit 90’s edition. (which they also promised to send home with me at the end of the night, because they aren’t big fans of this edition.)
We played a game and towards the end, when I had all my pie pieces (I was the grunge rocker, if you must know), I kept overrolling the middle square. For the life of me, I just couldn’t roll myself into it. I would answer four questions right in a row and roll a five or a six every time. When I finally landed in the middle, the question was something to the effect of “Who is the lead singer of Limp Bizkit?”
Shit.
We all wanted the game to be over. We’d had our dessert, it was close to 11PM, and we all wanted to be done. Lukcy for me, they aren’t the supercompetitive type that have to end the game with a clear and honest winner.
“Fred.”
“Fred. Fred. Fred Hirsch? I know that’s wrong. Fred… Fred… ersh… Fred Hirsch. That’s my answer.”
As you all knew immediately, the lead singer of Limp BIzkit is Fred Durst not Fred Hirsh. But they gave it to me. They declared me the winner, packed up the cards and sent me out the door with my spoils. It was a great night and sometimes I forget how much I love to sit around with a couple people and play a board game.
