TBD Minyan

Writer: Leah JonesLeah Jones

This is something I wrote in a private email about TBD Minyan – a new progressive prayer community that I’m founding with a few of my friends in Edgewater. Don’t consider this a whole post, but I wanted to share some of the thought process behind this new community.

The TBD Minyan is the natural progression of Loosely Defined and Itza Mitzva. While not defined by age, the core of the group is in the same demographic of what’s called “The Odyssey Years” by Rabbi Elie Kaufner in Empowered Judaism. The Odyssey Years are the years between college and marriage/babies, when young Jews are looking for something, but not typically finding it inside of synagogue walls.

We’ve filled the gap at Emanuel the past few years with Loosely Defined for social events, Itza Mitzva for study, shabbat dinners and holiday dinners for community and recently found that we wanted a different prayer experience than is offered at Emanuel. A number of us have experienced indie minyanim in other cities and enjoyed the lay lead services, but didn’t feel comfortable with the full traditional liturgy. So we decided to try something on our own.
