May 2002: I move into my current rental and say, “this is the last apartment I’ll ever rent. When I move it will be into my own place.”
February 2005: My roommate tells me he is going to move out. I have to find a new roommate for the apartment or find a one bedroom and live on my own.
February 7, 2005: I send an email to all my friends. Subject: Casting a wide net. I put the feelers out, I’m looking for a roommate, who is interested. I also solicit life advice from everyone on the list.
February 8, 2005: I call Ronnie to ask him to meet me for dinner. He asks me why I’m not buying a condo instead of renting. Seed is re-planted, but then I freak out about buying.
February 28, 2005: I post an ad on Craigslist and send it to all my friends. The Roommate Search officially begins.
March 1, 2005: I post a new ad and send it to all my friends, again. My original ad was on the angry side–the result of a relationship fizzle.
March 2, 2005: I look at a one bedroom and tell myself that I’ll sublet and buy in September.
March 3, 2005: Application is denied for the one bedroom.
March 4, 2005: I go to an openhouse for a large studio in my neighborhood. I can put off buying another day.
March 5, 2005: A customer introduces me to her Real Estate Agents. I decide there is no back-up plan, I will buy a condo. No more roommate searches, no more one bedroom searches. I’m going to buy.
March 5, 2005: Have first conversation with Mr. Mortgage.
March 7, 2005: Have my first meeting with Mr. Mortgage, leave feeling very deflated and like my dream is over.
March 8, 2005: Make first attempt on Lendingtree.com.
March 8-11, 2005: Get enough mortgage stuff worked out that I’m allowed to meet my Realtors.
March 14, 2005: Spend the day with my realtors and look at four condos.
March 15, 2005: Return to Condo of Lust for a night viewing.
March 16, 2005: Beg Mr. Mortgage guy to let me make an offer.
March 17, 2005: Mr. Mortgage gives me the go ahead to make an offer. My Realtor comes to the shop and in between customers, she explains the contract to me. We make an offer and at 8PM, revise the offer.
March 18, 2005: I wake up impatient. When will I know? I bake challah, buy a bed, drink coffee, clean the kitchen, wander my neighborhood, pace. 1:00 PM I get the call. My offer is accepted.
By March 25, 2005: Finish Attorney Review and Inspection.
April 27, 2005: Closing Scheduled.
April 30, 2005: Lease on last rental ever ends and my grown up life begins.
